Heat exchange system

  • Copper, insulation: The boiler is copper which retains heat better than stainless steel. Typically copper boilers are more susceptible to limescale when you compare them to stainless steel boilers. Therefore, we highly recommend using a water softener. The manufacturer wraps the boiler with insulation for maximum heat retention. Internal pipes are also in copper.
  • Pull a shot & steam milk at the same time: Steam is always readily available. Hence, there is no wait time going from coffee to steam mode.
  • Thermo-siphon double cycle system: Keeps the brew group and the boiler always hot, at the right temperature.
  • Polymer tubing connection: From the boiler to steam and hot water valves: Alimentary. Able to withstand high pressure and high temperatures up to 620 °F. Facilitates easier repairs. Most importantly, is limescale resistant.
Manual resettable safety thermostat: Located on top of the boiler.

E-61 grouphead

  • Constantly heated: Hot water circulates from the heat exchanger through the grouphead and back to keep the grouphead and your portafilter nice and hot. As a result, the grouphead temperature is constant and stable when compared to other groupheads that have a built-in heating element.
  • Pre-infusion: The lever next to the grouphead activates a microswitch which turns on the pump to pump water through the coffee grinds. Pulling the lever halfway up will open the valve to allow water into the grouphead without activating the pump. Please note that true pre-infusion requires a direct water connection whereby the water pressure from the water line creates the true pre-infusion.

Vibratory pump

  • Efficient: 41 watts, rated up to 15 bar with air valve bypass. You only need 9 bars to extract perfect espresso, and wattage has no correlation to longevity.
Cost-effective: Pumps will degrade in performance over time. Replacing a vibration pump will cost less than a rotary vane pump.

Tank / reservoir system

  • Particle filter: Protects the machine from any unseen particles entering the boiler. You can remove this filter if you are installing an inline water softener.
  • Auto-shut off: Prevents burning out the heating element. There is a two-stage shutoff. There is a magnetic float in the water tank that detects when the water is low. The other is the spring-activated plate underneath the water tank that detects when the tank is removed.

Separate steam / hot water wands

  • Multi-directional: Allows for more movement and flexibility. The wands connect to the valves at an angle to the side for even more flexibility. As a result, there is less risk of burning oneself from the exposed grouphead.
  • No burn: Reduces the risk of burning your fingers. Please note the tip and valve connection are still hot.
  • 2-hole steam tip: Allows for a slow gradual build-up of microfoam.
  • Rotational knobs: Allows for easier control of the intensity.

  • Steam (boiler) pressure gauge: Top half. Measures from 0 to 4 bar. The optimal pressure is between 0.8 and 1.1.
Brew (pump) pressure gauge: Bottom half. Measures from 0 to 16 bar. The optimal pressure is between 8 and 10.

  • Multi-directional wands: Allows for more movement and flexibility.
  • No burn: Allows you to move the wand by touching anywhere on the arm. Please note the tip and the valves are still hot.
  • 2-hole steam tip: Allows for a slow gradual build-up of microfoam.

  1. Matteo Toniolo (verified owner)

I had the Mara Lelit in the picture for 10 months. I do not feel like it needs any pid or anything else. The pressure has not changed a bit. The milk foam I am getting is spectacular, I would not call it foam, I call it cream. I have had no troubles whatsoever with this machine, which i clean once a month for 15 minutes and I have been following the instructions and directions. I make myself two capuccinos with a double espresso each morning at breakfast and then one more espresso. I also have a Lelit grinder. I have tried different coffee places with espresso machines in the US and in Italy, and I can tell by comparison what I am getting at home is way better. Starbucks is light years away from what you can do with this jewell of a machine. The design of this machine is probably the reason of it being such a good companion of my life. I always look forward to my mornings. One of the best investments I have ever made.

I’m pretty new to the espresso game – this is my first machine for home use. I did about a months worth of research, and kept seeing the name “Lelit” pop up when people were discussing high quality machines at an affordable price.

    My priorities for purchasing were:

    1) It had to be compact enough to fit in the limited amount of counter space I had available
    2) It had to have an E61 group head as I really like the aesthetic and appreciate the engineering
    3) It had to be easily serviceable, with replacement parts available online
    4) It had to be around the $1000 price point

The Lelit Mara HX met my requirements exactly. After using it now for about a month, I can say that I absolutely made the right choice. The machine itself is beautiful and built like a tank. To the best of my knowledge it’s the smallest, most compact E61 espresso machine. It fits perfectly in my small kitchen, while still having a powerful steam wand and hot water spout.

When it arrived, the machine itself (and paper manual) was soaking wet due to the testing that 1st Line does prior to shipping. A minor inconvenience, but opening up the machine and letting it dry out for 24 hours went by quickly enough. I appreciate the pre-shipping testing that 1st Line does to make sure that I receive exactly what I paid for.

I also purchased the wood upgrade kit with bottomless portafilter, and can definitely recommend the additional purchase. The wood makes the machine pop and adds a bit more of a premium look to the whole rig.

I’d also recommend purchasing an E61 group head thermometer. This takes out all the guesswork of determining if the water at the portafilter is the right temperature. I’ve found that it the machine takes 30-40 minutes to fully heat up, or 20 minutes if you’re impatient and flush routinely as it heats up.

I also don’t feel like I’m missing out on some of the features of the more expensive Mara versions. I don’t know that a PID or screen would help me make espresso better or more efficiently.
