Multi-Directional Steam and Hot Water Wand

Allows for more flexibility. Joystick controls give instant on / off operation as opposed to knobs that you must turn clockwise / counter-clockwise. Each wand has a rubber cover to prevent your fingers from burning. However, cool touch wands were NOT selected as this steam wand offers a greater throughput of steam power!

Very Large Water Tank

A 4-liter water reservoir means fewer refills for higher volume use. Electronic sensors detect low water levels and indicate it on the touch display. Refilling occurs from the top of the machine by lifting up the lid on hinges. However, we strongly recommend removing the reservoir for refilling any espresso machine to avoid getting any water on top of the espresso machine.

On the left side of the reservoir, there is a low water sensor. This sensor can be calibrated through the Touch Display screen.

  • Since this is a new model, every Bezzera Matrix/Duo model gets inspected, bench tested, and calibrated with ‘water only’ prior to shipping. Upon arrival, please use the machine within 5 business days.
  • Do not move or lift the machine from the top rails as damage may occur to the rails or body of the machine.
  • The Bezzera Matrix DE comes from Bezzera on a mini pallet, which is why we will ship this machine out to you, the customer, on a pallet. Additionally, it is less likely that your machine will arrive damaged with this shipping method.
  • 15 AMP plug and cable are designed to be used with 15 AMP in a continuous way and they admit pick of current until around 20 AMP. During our tests, we recorded 17,76 AMP (as maximum current) only in the 3:20 minutes of the warm-up time (when both boiler heat up together).
  • During the coffee brewing the service boiler heating element is disabled and when the machine is not used, thanks to the PID controls, only current impulses are given to the heating elements.
  • Note from Bezzera dated 06/04/2024:
    • Starting with all DUO and Matrix espresso machines produced by Bezzera after June 2024 will be manufactured with a 15 amp standard plug and electrical current between both steam and coffee boilers in 110 volt versions. In other words, 110 volt models can not have both boilers being powered at the same time (known as no priority).
  • Note from Bezzera dated 03/25/2021:
    • 20 AMP plug will continue to be used on Matrix and Duo 110 Volt versions because the safety standards do not allow the use of an undersized plug compared with the power consumption reported in the machine data label.
    • We will add advice into the machine box where we explain to the final user that it is possible to use the machine with a 15 Amp plug adapter only setting a boiler priority.
    • We would like to inform you that, according to our tests, the major difference in the machine performance, setting or not the boiler priority, is in the warm-up period.
    • We faced no big performance differences in the coffee thermostability and water/steam services, in the regular machine use, giving priority to a coffee or steam boiler.
  • WARM-UP TIME (no priority)
    Coffee service: 3:20 min
Hot water / steam service: 6:45 min
  • WARM-UP TIME (coffee boiler/service boiler priority)
    Coffee service: 7:10 min
Hot water / steam service: 10:10 min
  • TEST CONDITION:
    Power supply: 110V
    Frequency: 60 Hz
    Room temperature: 22°C
    Coffee boiler set point: 92°C
    Service boiler set point: 125°C

1 review for Bezzera Matrix DE V2 Dual Boiler Espresso Machine

  1. Jack Douglas

This is my personal review of the Bezzera Matrix DE Dual Boiler Triple PID espresso machine I bought from 1st-Line Equipment. The machine is very heavy,109 lbs. with pallet. Without the pallet it is still very heavy. I’m strong but needed some help lifting the machine. I’ve had the machine since December 26, 2019, the day after Christmas and just had a BWT water filter system installed this past weekend, 10 January 2020. It is a huge upgrade from my previous single boiler espresso machine. This model has the red, green or blue lighted side panels. I keep mine on blue just because I like blue and it’s looks great in my kitchen. The lighted panels can easily be turned off.
I highly recommend reading the entire manual before attempting to use the new machine including filling the water tank; it has to be calibrated in order to shut off properly and requires a dry and empty tank in order to set this function. This is a one-time setup. The unit comes with tank mode as the default setting.
The correct espresso dosing amount and tamping pressure took a number of tries before I got a really good shot. The Bezzera Matrix DE is a very sensitive and sophisticated machine. A good espresso bean grinder is a must for use with the Bezzera. Getting the right degree of fineness takes some trial and error. I did not buy a calibrated 30 lb. tamp or espresso scale, so it took some experimenting and a call to Jim at 1st-line to get the dose volume and time of shot sorted out after I had gotten the fineness of a good grind. That’s paid off because I’m now getting shots superior to my local café shop. I’ve stopped going out for espresso as I now have really good at home. I use the pre-infusion function, but I’m not sure if it improves my shot. I like the concept so I use it.
Though the Bezzera Matrix DE is simple to use after getting familiar with its many functions and the electronic display panel. It is definitely a professional quality machine that requires a commitment by the user and an understanding of a good quality espresso shot.
The Bezzera Matrix DE has 5 buttons on the top front of the machine that dispense the water. There is no lever to manually dispense the water. I love the buttons because my old espresso machine had buttons and no lever. I started by using the manual button, the one on the far right with squiggles on it, until I could repeat a good double espresso shot. Once I felt good about my shot I used the dose programming button for a double espresso to automatically set it. This is one of the features that sets the Bezzera Matrix DE apart from other machines and for me a favorite. Once the auto button is programmed for a double shot the machine will automatically shut off when the cup is filled with the exact same volume of espresso shot after shot. So, if you overfill, underfill, under tamp or over tamp the portafilter the machine automatically adjusts the time of the shot to shut off when the pre-programmed dose volume is attained. That one thing sets the Bezzera Matrix DE apart from any machine I’ve owned. You get a perfect double espresso, or shot of your choice, every time.
The steam lever works great and creates great foam for lattes and cappuccinos. It has taken me practice to get good results and I’ve dumped a few mishaps. The hot water lever works great, but I seldom need that feature.
The Bezzera Matrix DE requires regular cleaning. After every shot I purge the group head with a few seconds of water, clean it with the brush. and purge it again for a few seconds. I set the group head maintenance reminder, a feature of this machine at 50 erogations and a message appears to clean the group head. There’s a election for slow or fast cleaning. For my first cleaning I used fast. I’m going to reset the frequency to 100 because I clean the group head after every shot. The auto-clean function is a very convenient feature and makes that job super simple.
I love the auto on-off function to program the machine to turn on every morning at a certain time and shut off at a set time later. It works great, but I learned that if you want to turn the machine back on later in the day the machine will not automatically shut back off after this out of cycle use. I learned that you have to manually shut off the machine by pressing the forced shut-off button, the bottom one, on the electronic display panel to re-engage the programmed auto turn-on turn-off times. After this is done the auto turn-off function will be re-engaged.
The Bezzera Matrix De is a top quality unit, all stainless-steel frame and interior components, substantial construction and a pleasure to use. With the BWT water filter installed the espresso is really delicious. I’m happy that Jim at 1st Line helped me with the purchase and I’m looking forward to years of good service from it.
