  • Single boiler machine: Can handle both espresso extractions and steaming functions. To get to steam mode, the steam switch needs to be depressed.
  • PID temperature control: Manages the coffee and steam temperature set by the user.
    • The coffee temperature can be programmed between 80 C – 100 C.
    • The steam temperature can be programmed between 105 C – 120 C.
  • Stainless steel body: Polished to a mirror finish.
  • E61 grouphead: Hot water circulates from thermosyphon tubes to/from the grouphead and boiler. As a result, this system keeps the grouphead and your portafilter nice and hot. This is a dual-purpose, single-boiler machine that does not have a heat exchanger. The lever next to the grouphead activates a microswitch which turns on the pump to pump water through the coffee grinds.
  • Pump pressure gauge: Indicate the brewing pressure during espresso extraction. Below the pump pressure gauge, there is a ‘P’ switch that powers the pump for hot water delivery through the opened steam wand. The ‘O/I’ switch is for powering up the espresso machine. The light in between is the power light.
  • Multi-directional steam wand: Allows for more flexibility. In addition, the joystick controls for the steam wand give an instant on / off operation as opposed to knobs that you must turn clockwise/counterclockwise. The control locks to fully open in the up position allowing you to use both hands when steaming.
  • Powerful vibratory pump: Rated at 15 bar. Please note that you only need 9 bars for espresso.
  • Three-way solenoid valve: Allows quick removal of portafilter after espresso extraction and immediately prepares for the next extraction.
  • Over pressure valve (OPV): Adjustable.
  • Water tank: Very large and removable.
  • Passive cup warmer on the top: Heat from the boiler rises and heats the top panel. Like any other espresso machine, it can take up to two hours to preheat your cups. Therefore, it is better to flash heat the cups from hot water from the grouphead or steam/water wand.
  • Accessories included: Single spout portafilter, double spout portafilter, 1-cup filter basket, 2-cup filter basket, blind filter basket, plastic tamper, plastic scoop, grouphead cleaning brush, and instruction manual.

Over the past 25 years I’ve had numerous espresso machines and the Bezzera Unica PID is the best machine for espresso that I’ve ever used. I’ve got the machine paired with a La Cimbali Junior grinder that I’ve been using for the past 15+ years and I was totally blown away by the level of espresso produced by the Unica. Serious crema. Also the single portafilter basket actually works well for a change compared to other machines I’ve used where you really couldn’t get a decent extraction out of the single baskets. In fact the single portafilter and basket is what I use on a daily basis with my Unica. The machine is beautiful and comes with both two portafilters, single and double spout, as well as the single and double baskets. Before getting the Unica, I always thought of PID as an unnecessary gimmick but I’ve come to love this feature on the Unica. It really helped in getting everything dialed in during my first week with the machine and can really help you fine tune your extraction. I’ve had the machine for about 5 months and typically make three singles every morning and a single in the evening after work. The reservoir gets low after about a week so I normally refill it with three quarts of water every Saturday. This machine is an espresso lover’s dream. It is a little bit of a hassle to steam with the single boiler since you have to wait a minute or two for the boiler to heat up but once there it steams like a champ. I really like this machine better than the heat exchanger machines for making espresso. While the heat exchangers are more convenient for making lots of capuccinos, the single boiler is tops for making espresso since the temperature stability is rock solid. Since I typically drink 30 espressos per week and just steam milk for one or two cappuccinos on the weekend for my wife, I decided to go for a hardcore espresso-first machine. The machine itself is beautiful, solid and really looks fantastic in the kitchen. I also like the size. It is bigger than your Gaggia Classics and Rancilo Silvias but not as big and monstrous as some of the other prosumer models like the Expobar Office. If you are primarily an espresso drinker, you will love this machine. It really is fantastic. (For reference, my other machines: Expobar Office Lever, Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, La Pavoni Professional, Micro Cimbali, Microcasa a Leva)

After obsessing for months about how to replace my damaged 1995 espresso machine, I finally settled on a Bezzera and this particular model. In my view, the Unica was like a shrunk down version of the classic big machines and perfect if one only did 3-4 shots in a cluster. I have been thrilled with the machine. It looks like a retro throwback, feels like a professional machine, and, with practice, makes a rich, full crema espresso but with all the satisfaction one would like driving a Ferrari. And 1st-Line couldn’t have been better. Lowest price available anywhere and impeccable service. The machine was in my house one day after my order. Don’t expect that every time, but it did happen in my case. If you want a professional-grade espresso, you won’t get better value with any machine other than this one.
